Starmer, Oman’s Sultan Address US-Iran Talks

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq spoke on Sunday about the US-Iran negotiations that took place on Saturday in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, as well as ongoing developments in the Strait of Hormuz.

During a phone call, the two leaders reviewed the discussions held in Pakistan, encouraging both sides to work toward a resolution. A statement from Starmer’s office indicated that they stressed the need for continued engagement to ease tensions.

"It was vital there was a continuation of the ceasefire, and that all parties avoided any further escalation," they agreed.

Regarding international coordination to guarantee safe maritime routes in the region, Starmer explained that following recent meetings led by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and British military officials, allied partners are still working toward restoring long-term freedom of navigation.

He also reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to protecting Oman’s security, while sharing updates on cooperation with Ukraine in drone technology development.

"It was clear Ukraine’s expertise had been vital to the region in recent weeks, while Russia appeared to continue to support Iran’s aggression," said Starmer.
