Trump Says Iran Is Eager for an Agreement
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized that while Iran seems keen, the nature of any potential agreement still needs to be examined. “We have to see what that deal is. But I think Iran looks like they want to make a deal very badly,” he said.
The president also pointed to American military activity in the region as part of the broader context. He highlighted the deployment of significant naval forces, stating, "We have a big armada, and we have a big fleet heading in that direction, gonna be there pretty soon. So, we’ll see how that works out."
Trump added that more discussions are anticipated early next week and cautioned Iran about the repercussions of a breakdown in negotiations. According to him, Tehran is well aware of the risks involved if talks collapse.
“We're going to meet again early next week, and they want to make a deal, Iran, as they should want to make a deal. They know the consequences if they don't. They don’t make a deal, the consequences are very steep,” Trump noted.
He made it clear that any agreement would categorically exclude Iran from possessing nuclear weapons. "But the one thing, and right up front, no nuclear weapons," he said. Trump reflected on past efforts, arguing that such a deal was not achievable earlier because Iran was unwilling at the time.
He added that Tehran is now prepared to concede far more than it was even a year ago, stressing that the current engagement has been ongoing for only one year since the start of his term.
Indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran took place in Oman on Friday, marking the latest round of diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
