Trump Says There Is Ongoing Negotiation Between US, Iran
"They are negotiating," Trump told reporters at the White House, without providing further details.
His comments followed an incident in the Arabian Sea, where a US fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that had approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
"They had a chance to do something a while ago, and it didn't work out, and we did (Operation) Midnight Hammer. I don't think they want that happening again, but they would like to negotiate. We are negotiating with them right now," Trump added.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that arrangements are being made to hold discussions with the US in the coming days, with consultations underway to finalize the venue.
“Planning has been made to hold the talks in the next few days, and consultations are underway to determine the location of the talks, which will be announced as soon as they are finalized," said spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
Earlier, a White House spokesperson indicated that US special envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet with Iranian officials later this week.
Witkoff had been expected to engage with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul on Friday for discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear program, according to reports.
However, reports suggest that Iran requested changes to the meeting location and format.
Representatives from several countries, including Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, had been anticipated to join the talks, but Iran now prefers a direct dialogue and has proposed moving the venue from Istanbul to Oman.
