Russia, Oman discuss rising tensions in Iran

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone on Friday with his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr Hamad Al Busaidi, to discuss the escalating situation in Iran. According to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement, the crisis is “being artificially fueled from outside and carries the risk of developing into a large-scale regional conflict.”

Both ministers stressed the importance of avoiding such a scenario and called for an end to external interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, noting that such actions violate fundamental principles of the UN Charter.

Lavrov and Al Busaidi also expressed support for increasing collective efforts to create favorable conditions for a broad, inclusive intra-Yemeni dialogue under UN auspices. In addition, they discussed the continued development of multifaceted Russian-Omani relations.

The phone call comes amid heightened regional tensions and fears of a possible US strike on Iran.

US President Donald Trump has voiced support for Iranian protesters, though he moderated his rhetoric in recent remarks. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of backing unrest and terrorism in the protests.
